Pigmentation Treatment London – Hyperpigmentation, Sunspots & Dark Spot Removal
Dark patches, sunspots, age spots and uneven skin tone do not all develop for the same reason – and therefore should not automatically receive the same treatment. At Belle Clinic, we assess the appearance and history of your skin concern before recommending a suitable treatment plan.
What Is Skin Pigmentation?
Pigmentation simply refers to the colour of your skin. One of the main substances responsible for skin colour is melanin, which is produced by specialised cells called melanocytes.
When certain areas of the skin produce or contain more pigment than the surrounding skin, they can appear darker. This is known as hyperpigmentation.
Hyperpigmentation may appear as small individual spots, freckle-like marks, larger patches or a more general uneven skin tone. Depending on its cause, it may be superficial or involve pigment at a deeper level of the skin.
What Are the Different Types of Skin Pigmentation?
Several different conditions can cause darker areas of skin. Understanding the difference helps determine which treatment may be appropriate.
Sunspots
Years of ultraviolet exposure can lead to localised areas of excess pigmentation. These flat brown marks are commonly found on sun-exposed areas including the face, forehead, cheeks, hands and décolletage.
Age Spots
Age spots, often called solar lentigines or liver spots, become increasingly noticeable with accumulated sun exposure over time. Despite the name, they are strongly associated with UV exposure rather than ageing alone.
Melasma
Melasma usually appears as symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches, commonly across the cheeks, forehead, nose or upper lip. Hormonal influences, genetic susceptibility and light exposure can all contribute.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH, can develop after inflammation or injury. Acne, picking, burns, irritation and some cosmetic procedures can leave darker marks after the original inflammation has settled.
Freckles
Freckles are small pigmented spots that often become more visible following sun exposure. Genetics plays an important role in whether someone develops freckles and how prominent they become.
Uneven Skin Tone
Uneven skin tone may involve a combination of pigmentation, previous inflammation, sun damage, texture and vascular redness. An assessment helps establish what is actually contributing to the uneven appearance.
What Causes Hyperpigmentation?
There is rarely one universal cause of pigmentation. Two people can have similar-looking dark patches but have completely different triggers.
Sun & UV Exposure
UV exposure stimulates melanin production. Repeated exposure can contribute to freckles, sunspots, age spots and worsening of existing pigmentation.
Hormonal Changes
Hormonal changes can influence melanin production, particularly in melasma. Pregnancy and hormonal medications are recognised triggers in some people.
Genetics
Genetics can influence skin colour, freckling and susceptibility to conditions such as melasma. A family history can therefore be relevant when assessing pigmentation.
Can Age, Skin Type, Skincare or Previous Treatments Cause Pigmentation?
Age & Sun Damage
Pigmentation often becomes more noticeable with age because UV damage accumulates over many years. This is why sunspots are frequently seen on the face and hands later in life.
Skin Type
All skin tones can develop pigmentation. However, skin with greater melanocyte activity may be particularly susceptible to post-inflammatory pigmentation following irritation or inflammation.
Acne & Inflammation
Acne, eczema, irritation, burns, cuts and other inflammatory events may leave persistent dark marks after healing. This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Skincare Products
Products that repeatedly irritate or inflame the skin may worsen dark marks in susceptible skin. More aggressive skincare is not necessarily better for pigmentation.
Incorrect Treatments
Excessive heat, inappropriate laser settings, aggressive peeling or traumatising the skin can potentially trigger inflammation and subsequent pigment changes. Professional assessment and appropriate treatment selection are therefore essential.
Medication & Medical Factors
Certain medicines and medical or hormonal conditions can contribute to changes in pigmentation. A new or unexplained pigmentation change should therefore not automatically be assumed to be cosmetic.
Is Melasma the Same as Ordinary Hyperpigmentation?
No. Hyperpigmentation is a broad term describing skin that has become darker, whereas melasma is a particular pigmentary condition.
Melasma frequently appears as irregular but often symmetrical patches across the cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip. Sunlight is an important trigger, while hormonal influences and genetic susceptibility may also contribute.
For this reason, Belle Clinic does not recommend choosing a pigmentation treatment simply because a mark looks brown. The nature of the pigmentation, skin type, history, previous treatments and possible triggers should first be considered.
Pigmentation Treatments Available at Belle Clinic
Treatment is selected according to the type and appearance of the skin concern rather than using one procedure for everyone.
PicoSure Laser Pigmentation Treatment
PicoSure is a picosecond laser technology used for selected pigmentary concerns. Picosecond technology delivers extremely short pulses of laser energy to target pigment while limiting prolonged thermal exposure.
Depending on assessment and suitability, laser pigmentation treatment may be considered for selected sun-induced pigmentation, freckles, age-related pigmented lesions and other appropriate pigment concerns.

Carbon Laser Facial
A carbon laser facial is primarily a skin rejuvenation treatment rather than a universal treatment for every form of pigmentation. It may be incorporated into a treatment plan when the aim is to improve the appearance of dullness, congestion, uneven-looking tone and overall skin clarity.
We sometimes describe this as a carbon skin brightening treatment; however, the aim is to improve the appearance of the skin rather than change someone's natural skin colour.

Chemical Peel for Pigmentation & Uneven Skin Tone
Chemical peels use carefully selected acids or peeling solutions to exfoliate the skin. Depending on the formulation and skin concern, chemical peeling may help improve superficial pigmentation, post-inflammatory marks, dullness and uneven-looking skin tone.
Peel strength and suitability must be chosen according to skin type, current skincare and the condition being treated.

CO2 Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing
Fractional CO2 laser is a resurfacing procedure more commonly selected when pigmentation exists alongside concerns such as uneven texture, photoageing or certain scars.
CO2 treatment is not automatically appropriate for every dark mark or every skin type. Because resurfacing creates a controlled skin response, careful consultation, treatment selection and aftercare are particularly important.
Explore CO2 Fractional Laser →Not Every Brown or Red Mark Is Pigmentation
Clients sometimes describe every visible facial mark as pigmentation. However, some marks that appear red, brown, purple or raised may have a completely different origin.
Facial Veins & Broken Capillaries
Red, pink, blue or purple thread-like marks may be associated with superficial blood vessels rather than melanin. These require a vascular assessment rather than pigmentation treatment.
Cherry Angiomas / Red Spots
Small bright-red or dark-red raised spots may be vascular lesions such as cherry angiomas. These are different from brown hyperpigmentation.
Skin Tags
Skin tags are small benign skin growths. Although some can become darker in colour, they are not simply deposits of excess pigmentation.
Veinwave / Diathermy
When a visible mark is vascular rather than pigmented, Belle Clinic may consider Veinwave/diathermy for suitable superficial facial vessels or selected vascular lesions following assessment.
This is why distinguishing a red vascular lesion from a brown pigmented lesion is important before treatment.
Plasma Pen
Plasma Pen is another treatment offered at Belle Clinic for selected superficial skin concerns. It may be considered for suitable skin tags and other appropriate lesions following assessment.

When pigmentation occurs alongside visible signs of sun damage and uneven-looking skin, a broader skin rejuvenation programme may sometimes be more appropriate than treating one individual spot.
Explore Laser Skin Rejuvenation →Which Treatment Is Best for Pigmentation?
There is no single “best pigmentation treatment” for every person. The correct approach depends on what is producing the visible mark.
| Skin Concern | Possible Approach | Important Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Selected sunspots / pigmented lesions | PicoSure / pigment laser assessment | Lesion must first be suitable for cosmetic laser treatment. |
| Superficial uneven pigmentation | Chemical peel | Peel selection depends on skin type and pigmentation. |
| Dull or uneven-looking complexion | Carbon laser facial / skin rejuvenation | Designed for overall skin appearance rather than every pigment disorder. |
| Photoageing with texture concerns | CO2 fractional laser | Requires careful suitability assessment and downtime. |
| Melasma | Individualised pigmentation plan | Melasma can be complex and may recur or worsen with triggers. |
| Red facial veins / broken capillaries | Vascular treatment such as Veinwave when appropriate | This is a vascular concern, not ordinary pigmentation. |
| Suitable skin tags | Plasma Pen / appropriate lesion treatment | A skin tag is a skin growth rather than hyperpigmentation. |
Can the Wrong Pigmentation Treatment Make Dark Spots Worse?
Potentially, yes. Skin inflammation itself can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in susceptible individuals.
This means excessively aggressive treatments, inappropriate treatment selection, poor aftercare or repeated irritation may sometimes make pigmentation more noticeable rather than improving it.
This is particularly important when treating darker skin tones, reactive skin and complex pigmentary conditions.
At Belle Clinic, the objective is not to use the strongest available procedure. It is to select an appropriate treatment according to the skin concern, skin type and treatment history.
Before Your Treatment, We Consider:
✓ What the pigmentation looks like
✓ How long it has been present
✓ Whether it changes with sunlight
✓ Previous treatments
✓ Current skincare products
✓ Skin type and response to inflammation
✓ Whether the concern appears pigmented or vascular
✓ Whether medical assessment should be sought first
Why Sun Protection Matters After Pigmentation Treatment
Professional treatment is only part of managing pigmentation. UV exposure stimulates pigment production and can make many pigmentation concerns more noticeable.
Consistent sun protection is therefore important both before and after treatment. This includes using an appropriate broad-spectrum sunscreen, avoiding unnecessary tanning and following the specific aftercare provided for your procedure.
For melasma in particular, ongoing protection from sunlight is a fundamental part of management because light exposure can trigger or worsen the condition.
When Should a Pigmented Lesion Be Checked Medically?
Cosmetic treatment should never be used simply to remove an unexplained lesion without appropriate assessment.
If a mole or pigmented lesion is new, changing, irregular, bleeding, repeatedly crusting, painful, itchy or otherwise concerning, medical assessment should be obtained before cosmetic laser, plasma or resurfacing treatment is considered.
Pigmentation Treatment London FAQs
What is the best treatment for pigmentation on the face?
It depends on the cause and depth of the pigmentation, your skin type and treatment history. Options at Belle Clinic include PicoSure laser, chemical peels, carbon laser facial and selected skin resurfacing procedures. A consultation helps determine which option may be suitable.
Can PicoSure remove pigmentation?
PicoSure is a picosecond laser platform designed to treat selected pigmentary conditions. Whether a particular mark is suitable for treatment depends on assessment of the lesion and the individual skin type.
Can pigmentation come back after laser treatment?
Pigmentation can recur or new pigmentation can develop, particularly when underlying triggers such as UV exposure, hormones or inflammation remain. Long-term sun protection is therefore important.
Are sunspots and age spots the same?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Many age spots are solar lentigines associated with accumulated UV exposure over time.
Can hormones cause facial pigmentation?
Yes. Hormonal influences are particularly associated with melasma. Pregnancy and some hormonal medicines may act as triggers in susceptible individuals.
Can skincare products cause hyperpigmentation?
Products that irritate or inflame the skin can potentially contribute to post-inflammatory pigmentation, especially in skin that is prone to pigment changes after inflammation.
Can acne cause pigmentation?
Yes. After an acne lesion settles, inflammation may leave a flat dark mark known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Picking or squeezing the skin may increase inflammation and make marks more noticeable.
Can chemical peels help pigmentation?
Chemical peels can be used for selected superficial pigmentation and uneven skin tone. The appropriate peel depends on skin type, pigmentation type, skincare history and treatment goals.
Is a red spot on my face pigmentation?
Not necessarily. Red marks can have several causes. Some are vascular, including superficial blood vessels or cherry angiomas, and therefore require a different approach from melanin-based pigmentation.
How many pigmentation treatment sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies according to the condition, pigment depth, skin response and treatment selected. Some concerns may improve relatively quickly while persistent or recurrent pigmentation can require a longer treatment plan.
Can pigmentation be permanently removed?
Results vary and permanent clearance cannot be guaranteed. Even after successful improvement, new pigmentation may develop due to sun exposure, hormonal influences, inflammation, ageing or other triggers.
Do I need a consultation before pigmentation treatment?
Assessment is important because not every dark, red or raised mark is the same condition. Your treatment should be selected according to the nature of the concern rather than its colour alone.
