What to Expect During Laser Tattoo Removal
Thinking about removing or fading a tattoo? Here is a practical guide to what happens before, during and after laser tattoo removal — including patch testing, treatment, healing and realistic expectations.
Laser tattoo removal is a gradual process rather than a one-appointment procedure. A suitable laser delivers controlled energy into tattoo pigment, fragmenting it so that fading can continue between appointments. Multiple sessions are commonly required, and the response varies according to the tattoo, pigment, skin and individual healing response.
One of the most common misunderstandings about tattoo removal is that the tattoo simply disappears when the laser passes over it. In reality, treatment begins a process of progressive fading.
That is why a responsible tattoo-removal plan considers more than the size of the tattoo. Colour, density, depth, location, previous treatments, skin type and the type of pigment can all matter.
How does laser tattoo removal actually work?
Tattoo pigment sits within the skin. Laser systems used for tattoo removal deliver energy that is absorbed by suitable tattoo pigments, causing pigment particles to fragment. The tattoo then fades progressively following treatment rather than being physically wiped away during the appointment.
Different pigments do not necessarily respond in the same way. Black ink, coloured ink and cosmetic tattoo pigments can behave differently, which is one reason an assessment before starting treatment is important.
What happens before your first laser session?
Treatment should begin with an assessment rather than immediately applying a laser to an unfamiliar tattoo. The practitioner needs to understand what is being treated and whether laser treatment is appropriate.
You may be asked about relevant medical history, medication, previous treatment of the tattoo, how old the tattoo is and whether your goal is maximum possible removal or simply enough fading for a future cover-up.
Expect the tattoo itself to be assessed
Factors such as pigment colour, density, layering, size and location can influence the treatment plan. Professional, amateur and cosmetic tattoos should not automatically be treated as though they are identical.
A patch test may be required
A patch test allows a small area to be assessed before proceeding with a full treatment. At Belle Clinic, patch testing forms part of the pre-treatment process for laser tattoo removal.
This is particularly important because the appearance of a pigment does not always tell the practitioner everything about its composition or how it may respond to laser energy.
What happens during laser tattoo removal?
The area is prepared
The treatment area is checked and prepared according to the agreed treatment plan.
Eye protection is used
Appropriate protective eyewear is an essential part of professional laser treatment. Laser equipment can present risks to the eyes, which is why controlled laser-safety procedures matter.
The laser is applied to the tattoo
The practitioner treats the selected pigment using settings appropriate to the treatment plan. The time required depends considerably on the size and characteristics of the area.
The skin is cooled and assessed
Cooling can be used to support comfort during treatment. Belle Clinic uses Zimmer cold-air cooling alongside PicoSure tattoo-removal treatment.
Does laser tattoo removal hurt?
Laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable, but the experience is not identical for everyone. Sensitivity can vary according to the treatment location, tattoo size and individual pain tolerance.
Cooling may help make treatment more comfortable. If discomfort is one of your main concerns, ask during your consultation how the clinic manages comfort and what is appropriate for your particular treatment.
What should you expect immediately afterwards?
Temporary skin reactions are possible following laser tattoo removal. Depending on the treatment and individual response, the area may appear red or swollen, and blistering or scabbing can occur during healing.
NHS patient guidance for laser tattoo removal advises patients not to pick, scratch or aggravate the treated area because doing so can increase the chance of infection or scarring.
General aftercare principles
- Follow the aftercare instructions supplied by your practitioner.
- Keep the treated area appropriately clean while it heals.
- Avoid picking, scratching or deliberately removing scabs.
- Protect the area from unnecessary sun and UV exposure.
- Wait until the area has healed before activities your practitioner advises you to avoid.
- Contact your treatment provider if healing does not appear normal.
How many laser tattoo removal sessions will you need?
There is no responsible single number that applies to every tattoo. Multiple sessions are commonly needed, but the course can differ substantially from one person and tattoo to another.
| Factor | Why it can matter |
|---|---|
| Ink colour | Different pigments absorb laser wavelengths differently. |
| Pigment density | Dense or heavily layered pigment may take longer to fade. |
| Tattoo size | Larger areas can require a different treatment plan. |
| Professional or amateur tattoo | The depth and amount of pigment may differ. |
| Previous treatment | A previously treated tattoo may respond differently. |
| Cosmetic pigment | Microblading and permanent-makeup pigments require individual assessment. |
| Individual response | Healing and progressive fading vary between people. |
At Belle Clinic, tattoo-removal appointments are normally planned with sufficient healing time between treatments rather than repeatedly treating the same area at very short intervals.
When will you see your tattoo fading?
Tattoo fading is progressive. The appearance immediately after laser treatment is therefore not the final result of that session.
Changes can continue during the interval between treatments. This is also why comparing photographs taken over a properly spaced treatment course can be more useful than judging the result immediately after an appointment.
Can every tattoo be completely removed?
No practitioner should promise complete clearance of every tattoo. Significant fading may be possible in suitable cases, but the response depends on the pigment and numerous individual factors.
For some people, complete removal is not actually the goal. Controlled fading may instead be used to make an existing tattoo easier to redesign or cover with new artwork.
What about eyebrow tattoos and microblading?
Cosmetic tattoo removal deserves separate consideration. Microblading, permanent eyebrow pigment and other permanent-makeup pigments can contain different formulations from conventional body-tattoo ink.
Because of this, an eyebrow tattoo should be assessed rather than assuming that it will behave exactly like a black body tattoo.
Belle Clinic also assesses selected permanent-makeup pigments. You can read more in our guide to permanent makeup tattoo removal .
What should you ask before choosing a tattoo-removal clinic?
The laser itself matters, but so does the way treatment is assessed, planned and delivered. Useful questions include:
- What laser technology will be used?
- Is my particular tattoo and pigment suitable for that technology?
- Will I need a patch test?
- Who will perform the treatment?
- What eye protection and laser-safety procedures are used?
- What reactions should I expect afterwards?
- What aftercare will I receive?
- How will you assess progress between sessions?
- What happens if the pigment responds unexpectedly?
These questions are often more useful than choosing a provider purely because they advertise the lowest price or promise the fewest sessions.
Laser tattoo removal FAQs
Does laser tattoo removal remove a tattoo in one session?
Usually not. Tattoo removal is generally a progressive process and multiple sessions are commonly required. The exact course depends on the tattoo and individual response.
Does the tattoo disappear immediately after laser treatment?
No. The tattoo can continue to fade after the appointment, so the immediate appearance is not the final result of the session.
Can laser tattoo removal cause scarring?
Scarring is a recognised possible complication. Appropriate treatment selection, professional laser practice and following aftercare instructions are important for reducing avoidable risks.
Can coloured tattoos be removed?
Some coloured pigments can respond to laser treatment, but different colours behave differently. The tattoo needs to be assessed to determine which pigments are likely to respond to the available laser technology.
Can PicoSure remove eyebrow tattoos?
Selected eyebrow and permanent-makeup pigments may be suitable for laser treatment, but cosmetic pigments need individual assessment because their composition and response can differ from conventional tattoo ink.
How long should I leave between tattoo-removal sessions?
Sessions need to be appropriately spaced so that the skin can recover and fading can develop. Your practitioner should advise the interval appropriate to your treatment plan rather than treating the area again before it has properly recovered.
